What you need to know about Nathaniel Bassey

Nathaniel Bassey, a famous worship leader and creative songwriter from Ikot Ofon Ikono, Uyo local government area in Akwa-Ibom state in South-South Nigeria, was born in Lagos. Mr E Joshua Bassey, his father, was a pastor in The Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly, and he had a passion for music and the gospel from a young age. He has inspired over twenty years ago when he witnessed Dr Panam Percy Paul, a renowned Nigerian gospel music legend, perform in concert, and his passion for music has developed and transferred into numerous musical experiences since then.

Bassey acquired an unusual interest in jazz music throughout his early years, and began listening to, mimicking, and performing the music of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davies, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Kirk Whalum, Phil Driscoll, Hugh Masakela, and other jazz greats. His enthusiasm for jazz led him to seek out bands and ensembles that followed the same lines. He later joined Spectrum 4, a famous jazz quartet in Lagos, where he performed with childhood pals.

Around that time, Nat, as he is affectionately known, was contacted by Elder Steve Rhodes, one of the most respected personalities in Nigerian jazz and music circles, to head, perhaps, the country’s first Jazz Orchestra – THE STEVE RHODES OCHESTRA. He was the band’s leader and main trumpet player for two years before moving on with his musical career. His unique and soulful trumpet playing style drew the attention of prominent artists and composers both inside and beyond the nation.

Nathaniel began to feel a profound desire within himself as time passed. His music had more to it than he realized. Later, he took time away from his many responsibilities to seek the Lord under the mentorship and guidance of Late Pastor Eskor Mfon, the previous Pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, City Of David Parish. Friends, artists, and colleagues were outraged by this choice, believing it was inconceivable to give up a successful mainstream music career to serve exclusively at a small church.

As Nat’s relationship with the Holy Spirit grew closer, he understood that music was more than just something to pass the time; it was a vital instrument in the Lord’s praise and worship. Soon after, Nathaniel established a music ministry, with the major focus being WORSHIP – Heavenly Music – that ministered solely to the Lord and served as a channel for Him to communicate with His people. His peaceful, vocal manner, along with his trumpet playing, has brought many people into the presence of the LORD at concerts, crusades, and churches.

Nathaniel, a graduate of Politics and International Relations at the University of London. He has attended music courses in and out of the country including the Middlesex University Summer School UK, where he studied popular music and music business. He writes, sings, and produces his own music and records with diverse groups of musicians.

Nathaniel’s debut album Elohim was recorded and mixed in Cape Town, South Africa in the year 2008. It has been described as a spiritual and Artistic masterpiece with the hit track “Someone’s knocking at the door” a soft-rock tune currently generating so much interest locally and internationally.
